TAC Controller Rules 2008

We are looking for controllers to assist at this competition.  The job is not hard and you get to quiz some of the top anglers in the world.  A Controller is assigned to a competitor, measuring and recording the trout. It’s an opportunity to watch and learn from the best Fly fisherman in the world. If you are looking to compete in a future event, this is a great way to learn the event process and to watch the stealthy techniques of some world class fly fishermen.

If you can help them, please contact us.

Responsibilities of a Controller

You must check every time a competitor lands a fish that-

  • All flies are dressed on hooks which are barbless, de-barbed or squeezed down flat.
  • The distance between the files is at least 50cm when hanging vertically.
  • The fish is landed in the net in the water.
  • Factory made floating, sinking or sink tip lines may be used (shooting heads are prohibited).
  • Neither sinking nor floating devices may be added to the leader.
  • Competition fly lines must be a minimum of 20 meters long.
  • All weight must be incorporated within the dressing.
  • Beadhead flies are allowed provided only one bead is exposed and the exposed bead is no more than 4mm in diameter.
  • Braided leaders are not allowed.
You must check that the fish counts-
  • Fish that is greater than or equal to 20 cm, using provided Measuring Tube.
  • Only fish hooked in the mouth area, i.e. in front of the gill cover will be eligible for the awarding of points.
  • A fish hooked inside the time limit is eligible if it is landed not more than ten (10) minutes after the end of the period.
  • That the netting of the fish is done by the competitor.
  • In the event of the loss of a fish by a controller before measurement, the competitor will be awarded the average of the points for all valid fish taken in that sector in that period.
  • Record the time, fish measurement and fish type onto the Scoring Sheet.
  • Must have the competitors confirm catch information by signing their scorecard at the end of the session.
You must not-
  • Give advise on how to or where to fish.
  • Supply tackle.
It is desirable if you-
  • Carry a copy of the rules with you.
  • Ask if you are unsure of any of the rules, Competition Rules download here.
  • Familiarize yourself with the beat that your competitor is going to fish.

If there is a breach of a rule then it is your responsibility to gather the facts and evidence necessary to prepare a report for the people controlling the event.

Controllers will be assigned to an individual competitor for each 3 hour session.  Controllers will be issued a fish measuring tube, clip board, and scoring sheet.  Controllers will return these items to the Sector Judge daily.  Controllers will provide time keeping of the session and time updates to the competitor.  Controllers will measure and release the fish in the safest manner possible and record the information on the Scoring Sheet. The daily time commitment will be very early to early evening for 3 fishing days (September 10-12).  Controllers must be able to transport themselves daily to their beat assignments. Controllers will need to bring waders and be able to cross the steam. If you are a first time Controller, a pre-event training session will be provided. See schedule below for latest update.

Updates for Controllers

The America Cup event is getting close and our Controller Drive is going strong.  We still need more volunteers to match our competitor numbers.  Please forward this email to anyone you know that may be interested in being involved in this great event.

I will be holding controller practice sessions at 3 different times.  I also live in the Vail Valley and am happy to meet individuals for a quick lesson too – just contact me and we can hit the Eagle.
Controller Practice Sessions:
Sunday 7th – Copper Mountain pond -  1pm – 3pm
Monday 8th - Copper Mountain pond -  6pm – 8pm
Tuesday 9th - Copper Mountain pond -  6pm – 8pm
This will only take about 30 minutes to go over the key rules, scoring and the measuring tube.  Just come by the pond when you can, I’ll be there.

We are asking controllers to drive to the competition venues each day.  That being said, I am going to work to have controllers working in areas that are near their home locations:
Eagle County controllers – take the Colorado River venue near Dotsero.
Summit County controllers – take The Blue and 10 Mile areas.
Leadville and south controllers – take the Arkansas 1 & Arkansas 2 venues.
I want to accommodate this to suit people’s needs since driving is needed.

We will be proving to controllers daily:
a boxed lunch and plenty of water
a measuring tube
scoring sheets and pens and a clip board
a large zip lock bag (in case of rain to store clip board and sheets)
I recommend that you also bring a folding chair, rain gear, and waders.
Note-Controllers are not required to ‘cross the stream’ to measure a fish, the competitor must bring it back over if controller desires not to cross.

Here is the quick and easy on what a Controller needs to know/understand TAC Controller Rules 2008.

Competition Schedule:
September Wednesday 10th
Session 1 - 9am – 12pm
Session 2 – 2pm – 5pm
September Thursday 11th
Session 3 – 9am – 12pm
Session 4 – 2pm – 5pm
September Friday 12th
Session 5 – 9am – 12pm
Awards Dinner – 4pm – 8pm (Town of Frisco marina)

Teams – Hungary and Poland are sending teams and these fisherman do not speak much, if any English at all.  If any controllers do speak these native tongues, please let us know as we’d like to pair you together.

Venues – the practice and competition waters have been assigned and are updated on the website.

Town of Frisco – the Awards Dinner is on Friday.  There will be food and beer provided, free of charge to all controllers and competitors.  Get your controller coupon so you don’t pay, on the last day from your Sector Judge.  This is open to the public and we will have casting, tying, and technique clinics going on.  There is a band and the mayor is coming to speak and hand out some awards.  We hope for a big crowd.  The awards ceremony will recognize individual and team winners.  This will be a great party and culmination to end this international event.

Thank you all and more updates will be coming -
